At Rennes-le-Chateau, Aude, France. Built by Saunière in the late 19th century, so something of a folly. Used as a library and with a great view over the valley. The place is the centre of lots of conspiracy theories about the keeping of ancient secrets, so using this ‘parchment’ texture from Playingwithbrushes seems appropriate.

Why shouldn’t it be considered a CONSPIRACY THEORY that 19 suicidal Arabs conspired together to hijack airliners and cause damage, death & destruction … or izat 2 weird?

my question is, in the context of the now infamous Bush remark, what constitutes an “outrageous conspiracy theory” ?

The events of 9/11 are not any kind of “conspiracy theory”. They were actual events planned and executed by a group who conspired together.

“outrageous” ones are based on people’s imagination, lack of knowledge, poor understanding of engineering and construction techniques and mainly personal prejudices.

It’s a theory that’s outside the norm and not accepted by the general public. Usually it involves something secretive being done by a government, company, or group, which may or may not be harmful or otherwise bad. (for example, the theory 9/11 was engineered by the government).

The theories are regarded as silly usually because either 1) they lack evidence or 2) upon closer examination many of the theories are absurd, making little practical sense.

Why are “conspiracy theories” disdained as a vehicle for learning?

It seems that either refuting or affirming these theories are a great way to learn about history and develop some critical thinking skills. Examples include:

Hitler Suicide
JFK assassination
Gulf of Tonken incident
9/11 Terrorist Act
Banking crisis of 2009

The standard high school history text books are so drying and uninteresting, I’m surprised they don’t disintegrate on the shelves for lack of substance. What are your thoughts?

I’m not talking about conspiracies that were found out during or before a major event.
I mean a major event which people thought was caused by “Group A”, and a small fringe group believed it was really caused by “Group B” and “Group A” had been falsely accused on purpose.
And then sometime later, historians or news reporters found out that the small fringe group was right and “Group B” really did it.
