What are some conspiracy theory fears of the past that never played out?

There are a lot of "Conspiracy theory" fears today involving a corrupt government planning a second great depression, killing its citizens though many varied means to engineer population control, etc. I’m too young to have heard any of the older ones if they existed. It would certainly comfort me to hear that in the 60’s, everyone believed aliens were going to invade because of a series of films being presented the the American public, or, I don’t know, anything else less "out there."

AIDS…. i think they could cure this if they really wanted but it’s in the world’s best interest to let some diseases through to help with population control….

that fake story that came out about pat tillman… he was a former football player on the arizona cardinals who decided to join the army to fight the war… the government made a big deal about how he was killed honorably in the field of battle and how he was a hero when he died only to find out later that he was killed by friendly cross-fire and it was covered up…
the michael moore films "fahrenheit 9/11" and "bowling for columbine" point out 10 conspiracy theories combined…
the gas prices spiking to $4 a gallon in the US… the president claimed he had no ties to oil (a lie being covered up) and the oil companies claimed they had to raise their prices b/c prices were being raised on them and that the blame lay in the middle east (the real reason we invaded iraq) and yet the oil companies are posting profits of $10,000,000,000 every 4 months (quarter)…
did anyone notice how the gas prices went down when the elections neared? there’s something fishy about that too….
