It was steam. Some of those steam pipes have been under those streets for 130 years.
Steam is very dangerous, and sometimes explodes.

they are probably working up to something big enough to declare martial law just before the elections so bush would be able to stay in office and wield his ignorance and warmongering powers still, for as long as possible. he’s having too much fun to give it up easily…i’m serious, i really do expect this to happen
