There are numerous reasons.
(1) New Energy and propulsion – The UFOs and what the government knows about them, provides answers to our energy crisis with cheap or free energy, as well as alternate propulsion systems. This could destroy our energy economy and cause widespread economic choas. Greedy energy and transport giants wont let this happen.
(2) Technological advantage – reverse engineered UFO technology provides us with an economic advantage over other countries. We can’t let foreign powers know what we have.
(3) Panic – A nervous public when confronted with the reality of extraterrestrials have proven their inability to cope, proven with the War of the Worlds radio play on the US east coast. However this does not apply so much today. The public is better equiped to deal with this info.
(4) Secrecy is self perpetuating – With the crash at Roswell, the alien intruders were designated hostile, and unparralelled secrecy was enacted to protect the public and national security. Once secrets and lies begin, nobody want to take the blame. One lie must cover the next, and soon the whole system is out of control

Because the have the average american right where they want them- paying taxes, buying gas, spending money they aint got....instead of thinking about time travel, defying gravity and all the things the aliens know about

Because people would panic and anarchy would rule. Why do you think that since the 1950’s there have been more and more movies, books, games, stories, etc… about aliens. It is to get people USED to the idea of aliens. By desensitizing people, they can accept things that would otherwise send the whole populace into a panic. Most notably Orson Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’ radio broadcast. There were actually people who killed themselves because they thought it was real.

It’s all about control my friend, but very shortly the very carefully constructed house of cards is going to come crashing down around their heads; and religion, politics and science will be in a turmoil….
They are here now as they have been for eons, but the Earth’s frequency is changing and we are about to evolve again, they (the Government & the Church) are losing their control and they are clutching at straws hoping it will go away..
But they cannot control the nature of the Cosmos…

If they cover up real events its so they don’t cause a mass panic

Go tell a city a terrorist attack is coming they’ll cause more destruction in panic than if a terror attack did happen
